Our location in Providence is convenient for the squid fishermen from Massachusetts and New Hampshire that squid fish in Newport, Jamestown or Sakonnet Point. Most stores carry a few squid jigs by Yozuri. We directly source jigs from Yamashita, Colman, Yozuri and Martinetti. We have the widest variety of squid jigs enabling anglers to meet the challenges of squid fishing in all conditions.

Yamashita has a long history of manufacturing squid jigs. Production of squid jigs began in 1965.
Since that time over 1500 profiles and colors have been released.
In the beginning people thought squid jigs were only for commercial fisherman. Squid Jigs were mainly used by boat fishermen. Squid jigs were larger than they are now as they were usually trolled.Yamashita started to promote squid fishing in fishing magazines and other media in the mid 80's . Squid fishing became popular with shore anglers and Yamashita made smaller jigs to accomodate the differing conditions faced by shore anglers.

Squid Fishing in New England

In the USA squid jigging has become very popular in a few states. On the east coast the New England states of RI and Massachusetts are the most productive areas. Newport RI is home of the " Goat Island Causeway" also known as the " Calamari Causeway" . Goat Island is a small Island resort that is connected by a causeway to Newport. This is likely the most popular and productive squid fishing location on the East Coast. Squid fishermen come from as far away as Virginia, NY, NH and Lowell, Boston and Springfield Mass. to fish in Newport, Jamestown and Sakonnet Point in Little Compton R.I.. Jigging for squid has cultural traditions and ties for many Southeast Asian people.

On a given night you will find 40 - 60 people jigging for squid at the Goat Island Causeway. More than often 80 % of squid fishermen there are Laotian, Vietnamese or Khmer. Squid is jigged and often cooked right on a grill, small squid are cooked whole without cleaning and eaten hot. Squid fishing is often a family affair, it takes patience. A light tackle rod and lighting with a wide variety of squid jigs of different sizes and colors is necessary as the squid can be very selective.

Squid fishing in Massachusetts is popular at Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island as well as Beverly.
